What is nasal aesthetics?

Nasal aesthetics is called rhinoplasty in the literature. It is surgery performed to reshape the nose. Aesthetic nose surgery is the most complex of all aesthetic operations.

What should the goals of aesthetic nose surgery be?

In aesthetic nose surgery, taking into account the existing structure of the nose and its relationship with the face, the following must be achieved:

A. Harmony of the nose with the other units of the face and with its own parts (the nasal root, the middle third, the nasal tip).

B. Ensuring that the breathing function of the nose is normal.

What is done from an aesthetic point of view in rhinoplasty?

• Refining the nasal tip
• Reducing or increasing the size of the nose
• Increasing or decreasing the projection of the nose from the face
• Changing the nasolabial and nasofrontal angle
• Correcting bony-cartilaginous humps in the middle third of the nose, etc.

What is done from a functional point of view in aesthetic nose surgery?

Rhinoplasty is not only an operation to correct the shape of the nose; at the same time, the correction of bony and cartilaginous deviations inside the nose and of breathing problems caused by turbinate hypertrophy (known as “nasal flesh”) is carried out in the same operation. If needed, removal of nasal polyps and sinus surgery can also be performed at the same time.

The importance of the doctor–patient dialogue in aesthetic nose surgery

The patient's wishes must be understood by the doctor, and the patient must be told whether these wishes are realistic and how much of them is achievable. The noses of all people in the world differ in the structure of bone, cartilage and skin. For this reason, the result after surgery will also differ. The result obtained on a nose with thin skin will not be the same as the result obtained on a patient with thick, oily skin.

Aesthetic nose surgery is not simply an operation to make the nose smaller

The main goal of aesthetic nose surgery is to create a nose that is in harmony with the other units of the face and that has a normal breathing function.

At what age can aesthetic nose surgery be performed?

Rhinoplasty should be performed after the development of the nose is complete. This limit is defined as 16–17 years of age in girls and 17–18 years of age in boys.
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia.

Normal way of life after rhinoplasty

The period after nasal aesthetics is a very comfortable one for the patient. One week after surgery, the plastic cast or plasters on the nose are removed and paper tape is applied for 5–7 days. After 2 weeks, once the swelling has subsided, patients return to their normal active lifestyle. However, in noses with thick skin, the subsidence of swelling on the nose may take up to 3–4 weeks. The oedema in the nasal skin gradually decreases over the following months, and the nose looks more refined and beautiful.
