Air gaps inside the facial bones and inside the bones which form the internal structure of the nose are called the sinus. Sinuses are located on both sides of the nose and have 4 different names. A gap located on the side of the nose, which is the largest of sinuses is called maxillary sinus cavity or antrum of Highmore. The sinus located on the upper side of the nose and inside the forehead bone is called frontal sinus, and the sinus located on the back and upper side of the nose is called the sphenoid. The sinuses with small gaps located on the outer side of the nose are ethmoid sinuses.

Sinuses are opened to the nose with ducts called ostium. Sinuses have the functions such as heating, moistening the air, and shaping the tone of voice. In cases lasting long and not treated properly, mucous membrane of the nose due to allergies and swelling of the nose gums, the duct between the nose and sinuses are violated and the microbes begin to grow in these gaps, as the result of this, the sinuses become inflamed. This is called sinusitis.

The symptoms

The sinusitis lasting no more than one month is called acute, but more long-lasting sinusitis is called chronic sinusitis.

The symptoms:

  • Nasal obstruction
  • Yellow-green or bloody nasal discharge
  • Pain around the eyes and on cheeks
  • A sense of pressure in head
  • Growing pains when tilting the head forward
  • Unpleasant mouth odor.

Diagnosis

Although the diagnosis of sinusitis is put according to the complaints and analysis, the true diagnosis is identified with the radiological investigations. Especially, in the patients who do not respond to the treatment and operation is considered, then Computer tomography should be taken.

Treatment

Please consult a doctor if symptoms last longer than 10 days. Sinusitis is not a disease that cannot be treated. Especially, in chronic sinusitis the main cause should be investigated. But in the acute sinusitis, if needed antibiotics, nasal drops, or the drugs preventing allergy are given to the patient up to three weeks. If there is the growth of nose meat complicating the breathing or the curvature of the nasal bone or cartilage then its treatment reduces the risk of its becoming chronic sinusitis.

In cases of chronic sinusitis that does not respond to treatment or when there is nasal polyp then surgical treatment is carried out. This operation is called functional endoscopic sinus surgery. The problems hindering sinus ventilation are eliminated by the technics conducted with a camera injected into the nose, and with endoscopic devices. The main goal is to tap sinuses, and clean the inside of the sinuses. The operation is mainly carried out inside the nose. It can sometimes carried out from the bottom of lip in order to get into the maxillary sinus. In this way the meat in the nose, other diseases such as bone curvature can be treated.
