Otoplasty – is a surgery which is mostly performed among the aesthetic ear surgeries and it is conducted for the purposes of correcting the condition of large ear.

The ear is called “large ear” when the external ear is swollen more forward than in norm. The main cause for this surgery is either less swelling in the shape of Y in external ear or the part of cartilage being more wide. A large part of the growth of external ear (90%) is completed up to 5 – 6 ages. Therefore, these surgeries should be performed till the school age. The main aim of conducting surgery at these ages prevents the adverse effect on childs psychology.

This surgery is performed under general anesthesia in children and locally in adults. This surgery can be performed at any age after 5-6 ages. The patient is discharge home on the same day after local anesthesia and on the next day after general anesthesia.

The surgical operation continues for 1 -2 hours. There are different techniques. The cutting is done at the back of the ear for scars of the surgery not to be visible. Different interventions can be executed according to the problems in the ear.

The ear skin is opened from the back, ear cartilages are emptied, if needed, some parts are thinned and cartilages are folded in an appropriate manner and determined with permanent stitches in the common used technique.

Stitches are removed within 8–12 days. There is closed bandage 1 day after the surgery, then this bandage is opened and the bandage appropriate for the patient is used (as a tennis bandage). This bandage remains up to 4 weeks.
