The region between the jaw and clavicle (collar–bone) is called neck. Lesions in this region can be small or large enough to be seen from the outside.

Causes – They are infections and tumors of the head and neck. It is caused by swelling of the lymph glands performing the protective function in the body and preventing the spread of tumor and infection. Diseases related to the skin of head and neck, mouth, tongue, tonsils, nose, throat, pharynx region, ears, throat, lungs and sometimes stomach causes the swelling of lymph gland in the neck. In addition, diseases of thyroid gland and salivary gland and congenital cysts, but those growing subsequently may be present as a lesion in the neck.

What to do?

There are lymph glands in the whole body and the majority is in the neck. It can be tumors forming especially in the neck of children who are suffering from upper respiratory tract infection. The neck of children being slim makes it easy to feel lymph nodes. When the disease is treated, this swelling will be reduced. You should consult otolaryngologist in severe and painful tumors growing though the treatment, which have redness or color change on it.

Diagnosis

Firstly, otolaryngologist should examine, if necessary, other analysis can be conducted. Sometimes, the physician makes diagnosis by examination and other analyses are required when it doesn’t respond to treatment. Blood analysis is need in the diseases such as infection, leukemia, and lymphoma. Radiological examination can be conducted in order to study the nature of swelling. If there is the suspicion of malignancy, biopsy is performed. Biopsy is performed with injection, rarely, by way of cutting and removing lymph node.

Treatment

Antibiotic therapy in lesions related to infection and surgical execution is performed in benign tumors. One or more of chemical therapy, radiotherapy or surgical intervention tactics are used depending on the type in malignant tumors.
